New Art at IB Library Celebrated!

Oct 30, 2020 11:44AM ● By Paul Spear

The San Diego County Library in Imperial Beach is so beautiful; it's attracting sea creatures to the shelves.  The Imperial Beach Arts Bureau has completed paintings on two utility boxes on the 8th Street side of the Library,  The artwork was funded through a grant from SDG&E, a partnership that has enabled the Arts Bureau to bring colorful designs to 14 locations in three neighborhoods of IB in the past few months.

On Thursday, October 22, members of IB Arts Bureau, the San Diego County Library system & Councilman Mark West gathered to celebrate the installation of new artwork.  Councilman West remarked “I’m so proud of the Arts Bureau for continuing to work on these beautification projects during this difficult time.  In the last three years they have installed more than 15 new murals, with another five currently in the design phase.” Partners on the project from the San Diego County Library system included Branch Manager Cecilia Salgado Begent, Director Migell Acosta, Deputy Director Donna Ohr, Assistant Branch Manager Jose Enriquez, as well as the President of Friends of the Library, Steve Mock.   Branch Manager, Salgado Begent stated, “The IB library values its partnership with IBAB and how it aligns with the Library’s strategic initiative of Culture and Arts. Collaboration and projects like the painting of the utility boxes, support local talent and bring a sense of well-being to the IB community.

The theme of the enhanced boxes are books, imagination & undersea life, designed with the hope of inspiring youth & adults to read more & share their ideas with others.  The designs for the Library boxes were conceived by Phil Iddings, a member of the Senior Center as well as IB Arts Bureau.  In addition to Mr. Iddings, Sherry Hansen & Dave Frink also helped with the artwork installation.  Mr. Frink, who is an Art Bureau Board member & Executive Director said, “We are fortunate to enjoy the partnership we have with SDG&E, as well as appreciating the library system & what it brings to the community”.

You can help bring more public art to the IB community & learn about IB's history by purchasing the Arts Bureau's 2021 calendar, now on sale at, ib, as well as local retailers like Surf Hut, IB Water & Vitamin Sea Wellness.  The calendar is the Arts Bureau’s major fundraiser of the year.
