Aug 08, 2020 06:46PM ● By Paul Spear

On Wednesday, August 5, The City Council proclaimed August to be Pride Month in Imperial Beach to celebrate our diversity and cultural differences, and show support of all our residents. The proclamation states the following:

LGBTQIA Pride Month

WHEREAS, the City of Imperial Beach celebrates the diversity of its community; and

WHEREAS, the City of Imperial Beach affirms and celebrates the LGBTQIA members of the Imperial Beach community and their past, present, and future contributions to enriching our society; and

WHEREAS, the term Pride emerged from the revolution stemming from the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City in 1969, which ignited the LGBTQIA movement; and,

WHEREAS, the LGBTQIA’s movement has fought for decades for equal rights from marriage equality to equal protections under the law; and

WHEREAS, we have made great progress as a society in securing many of these rights, yet there is still much work to be done; and,

WHEREAS, because of societal norms LGBTQIA members can suffer severe challenges such as isolation, abandonment, and lack of acceptance, which contributes to high suicide rates and high homelessness rates in youth; and,

WHEREAS, in 2019 advocates tracked at least 27 deaths of transgender or gender non-conforming people in the U.S. due to fatal violence, the majority of whom were Black transgender women; and

WHEREAS, the City of Imperial Beach stands united against those who threaten the safety of our LGBTQIA community members and unequivocally condemns any hate speech, hate violence, or any kind of aggression or discrimination against them; and

WHEREAS, City of Imperial Beach, no matter the circumstances, is proud to support our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual (LGBTQIA) community and their right to exist, to be equal under the law, and to pursue happiness; and

WHEREAS, everyone should be able to live without fear of prejudice, discrimination, violence and hatred based on race, religion, gender identity or sexual orientation; and

WHEREAS, numerous and diverse community groups, residents, and allies wish to engage in activities that support the understanding, uplifting, and affirmation of the LGBTQIA community;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Serge Dedina, Mayor of the City of Imperial Beach, California, together with the City Council, take great pleasure in proclaiming August 2020 as LGBTQIA PRIDE Month in the City of Imperial Beach and declare that the raising and flying of the PRIDE flag is a symbolic act by the City of Imperial Beach intended to communicate the City’s support and affirmation of our LGBTQIA community.
