The Mar Vista High School Mariners' Boys Basketball team squared off against Heath Sciences in their second game of the season on Thursday night in the D4 Showcase Showdown Tournament.

The first quarter was nip and tuck with the Mariners leading 14-9 at the end of the 1st quarter.  The Mariners continued to play hard in the 2nd opening up a 15 point lead at the half and a score of 30 to 15.  Said Coach Reed, " This is the best we have played defensively this year.  All that credit goes to top assistant Alton Colter who basically serves as the defensive coordinator."

Mar Vista and Health Sciences played closed in the third quarter trading baskets most of the quarter. By the third MVHS out scored Health Sciences 20 to 16 to expand their lead by 4  and take a 50 to 31 lead after 3 quarters.

The Mariners toughness and grit showed in the 4th quarter with Mar Nista winning 67-39.

Captain and senior forward Gabriel Schiazza led the team with 21 points and 12 rebounds.  Additionally, senior Dylan Wolfe changed the game once he moved to guard the Surgeons best player and held him to only 2 points after the adjustment.  Freshman Jeffrey Temcho took home the Maxpreps player of the game honors with an all-around great game contributing 14 pts on only 7 shot attempts, 6 assists and 5 steals.  Freshman Josiah Scott, currently the teams second leading scorer had 10 points, 8 assists and 5 steals.  Josh Dupree added 8 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.  Wolfe added 8 and Senior Pete Flores has been a fantastic sixth man so far this year scored 6 points and truly brought energy and what a lift he was off the bench.  Please come out and support the Mariners next week, here is the link,ca)/basketball.
