Sierra Service Project (SSP) to Offer Free Home Repair for Qualified Residents of Imperial Beach, National City and parts of San Diego now through the first week of August.
Sierra Service Project does repair work on homes in the communities we serve. The type of work ranges from building or repairing wheelchair ramps, stairs, porches, awnings, and fences to yard work and painting.
Approximately 70 teenagers will rotate into Imperial Beach and National City weekly to help fix up things around the home for residents. The teenagers come mostly from California. Last year some came from as far away from states like Arizona and Utah and this year some will come as far away as Massachusetts to be in Imperial Beach this summer as part of Sierra Service Project.
The teenagers are mostly from church groups but that is not a requirement for them to participate in the program. Some of the teenagers have never seen the ocean before.
This year, in Imperial Beach, they will be hosting a weekly community BBQs on Wednesday's at the Park just south of the IB Pier by the Dempsey Safety Center from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. They invite the public to come to meet and mingle with the teens.
Tuesday night the and the IB Community Center, formally the Imperial Beach United Methodist Church, hosted a dinner for the group.
The group leaders this year for SSP are Angelia Mariti and Joseph MaKunga.
