Students, Staff, Parents, and Community Members among Recipients


Imperial Beach, CA – On May 30, 2019, Superintendent Katie McNamara hosted an event at the Imperial Beach Public Library to honor South Bay’s District Champions.  These awards recognize students, parents/guardians, staff, teams, and community members that demonstrate outstanding work, dedication to the District's mission and goals, commitment to our community, and strong support for South Bay.  We are proud to celebrate the contributions of the following Champions:


 Katherine Patton – This teacher from Mendoza School was honored for her outstanding instruction and campus leadership.

 Karen Mayor, Mercedes Ballon, Marlene Cavanaugh, Maria Gutierrez-Lane, Martha Ibarra, Amado Perez Montes, Nydia Gallo, Lorena Zarzosa, Noemi Mozqueda, and Georgina Diaz – The Special Education Instructional Assistant team from Imperial Beach Charter School was celebrated for their contributions to student achievement and amazing teamwork.

 Erika Vasquez – A Sixth Grade student from Oneonta School, Erika was recognized for her service to students and contributions to positive school culture.

 Elizabeth Rivera – This parent at Nestor Language Academy was honored for her service to the school community.

 Barbara Gutierrez and Karla Brown – The front office team from Pence School was celebrated for their teamwork and for creating a welcoming environment.

 Peter Salisbury – A Supervision Assistant at Oneonta School, Pete was recognized for his commitment to student safety and his many contributions to the site.

 Margarita Gonzalez – This volunteer at Nestor Language Academy was celebrated for her commitment to the students, families, and staff at the school.

 Debra McKay – A volunteer at Pence School, Debra was honored for her dedicated service to the school community.

 Cristina Meijer, Audrey Christian, and Amber Vissuet – These parents from Imperial Beach Charter School were recognized for their outstanding support of students and staff.

 Doreen Wick – The Operations Lead in the Transportation Department, Doreen was celebrated for her dedication and amazing work.

 James-Robert Sheppard – The Head Custodian at Imperial Beach Charter School West was honored for his commitment to South Bay.



Dr. McNamara created the recognition program and stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to honor those that demonstrate such a high level of support and dedication to our District.  Congratulations to these recipients!”  South Bay will collect nominations  for the 2019-2020 school year and will host recognition events on October 25 and December 13, 2019 and March 20 and May 29, 2020.
