Speaker Series - Putting Sand on the Beach  Hosted by Tijuana Estuary with Bonnie Ludka, Ph. D, Scripps Institution of Oceanography

Putting Sand on the Beach: Intended and Unintended Consequences

What is beach nourishment? It is defined as the artificial addition of sand on a beach and is a common shore protection measure.

At Imperial Beach, a beach nourishment project in 2012 helped prevent wave-driven flooding, but it also contributed to groundwater flooding and the closure of the Tijuana River Mouth. Join us as Bonnie Ludka shares her research on local beach nourishment projects and what the long-term effects might mean for this practice.
