As South Bay Urgent Care approaches its 2nd Anniversary, it has made a big impact on our local community in many different ways! Starting May 1st, South Bay Urgent Care will be will be extending its weekday hours and Open until 8 pm Monday through Friday. The weekend hours of 10am -6 pm will remain the same. This reflects the growth and success of a local family run business due to community support.
Starting May 1st, South Bay Urgent Care will be extending their hours. The month of May is their Second Anniversary of Serving Imperial Beach and South San Diego with Much Needed Urgent Health Care Services.
When South Bay Urgent Care (SBUC) held their Grand Opening in May
of 2017, it was a dream come true for Drs. Matt and Kimberly Dickson. The Imperial
Beach couple always wanted to open a medical practice in the beach community
they call home. They wanted to give back to the community where they are
raising their daughter Annie Opal and son Bradford. Luckily for us, Imperial Beach was the
community they chose.
Dr. Kim and Dr. Matt invested a lot of hard work and love into building a 7,500-sq. ft. urgent care facility. SBUC boast a modern nurse’s station, a well-equipped procedure room, 8 large exam room rooms, along with the on-site lab and x-ray imaging for a much-needed high quality medical facility serving Imperial Beach and South San Diego.
As SBUC has grown, they have welcomed many new staff members. Most patients would say that
“Rusty” the clinic mascot is the most famous of their staff members. He is a well-loved Lab-mix from a local shelter, and their family dog. Rusty was voted as their 2017 employee of the year by clinic staff. He interacts with some patients if they request, but the majority of his time is spent “holding down the couch” in the employee break room at the clinic.
Keeping it local! Bonni, LVN, is a 1976 graduate from Mar Vista High, and plays a central role in nursing oversight and clinic coordination. Bonni is a local IB resident who has deep roots in IB. Many patients from the community know Bonni who has been the clinic manager since it opened. Also there from the initial clinic startup is Isaac Endahl PA-C. He graduated from Bonita High School in 2001 then attended Southwestern College for paramedic training prior to attending the University of Washington for Physician his Assistant Education. Both Isaac and Bonni brought their medical expertise back to the South Bay where they grew up.
It is important to the Drs. Dickson that they support the military and veterans in their community. Tony, SBUC’s x-ray tech, is a US Marine Corps Purple Heart veteran. He was hired by the Drs. Dickson shortly after graduating from Brightwood College in 2017 as an MA/X-Ray tech, and has been the lead radiology supervisor in the clinic since it opened. The newest addition to SBUC’s staff is Kimberly Gaines PA-C, who is also a veteran. She completed her US Navy Emergency Medicine fellowship at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. Both Kimberly and Tony were deployed to Afghanistan, and we thank them for their service.
Since its opening, South Bay Urgent Care has been heavily involved in giving back to the community. They have supported many programs and events at our local elementary schools and at our local high schools. Said Tyler Arciaga, Athletic Director at Mar Vista High School, "South Bay Urgent Care has been a tremendous supporter of Mar Vista Athletics during their first year in business. ... Their willingness to open their doors to Mar Vista is incredibly generous." They have begun the tradition of providing the Mar Vista athletes with low-cost “sports pre-participation physicals,” and generously donate all the proceeds back to support the athletic programs. Dr. Matt Dickson volunteers his Friday nights to support the Mar Vista football team on the field during home games. Both doctors are avid supporters of Mar Vista swim and water polo teams.
SBUC has filled a big void in our community. Before their opening 2 years ago, to receive many of the services which they provide, patients would need to travel outside of IB, and were faced with long waits. South Bay Urgent Care is open 7 days a week for minor emergencies, and no appointment is necessary. They have on-site X-ray & lab services with a professional, courteous staff in a very clean, modern and custom built facility. South Bay Urgent Care accepts a wide variety of insurance plans including Medicare, Tricare, Molina, CHG and many more. They have minimal wait times and have affordable self-pay rates for those patients without insurance, at a cost that is a small fraction compared to an ER visit.
