Press Release from MVHS Mariner Head Football Coach Released the information below on their trip to San Jose and the photos in this article:
The Mariner Football team just completed their out-town trip for the sixth consecutive season to San Jose and the greater Bay Area. They are now 5-1 on the out-of-town trips as the Mariners defeated San Jose High School 34-0. Standouts included Jacob Galeana (2 rushing touchdowns), Hassan Spruill (1 rushing TD, 1 Interception, 1 Fumble Recovery), Marcelino Maclang (1 Touchdown), Damon Thomas (1 Sack, 4 tackles) and Cesar Macias (2 Field Goals and four extra point attempts). The defense shut out their opponent for the second week in a row and led by Defensive Coordinator Greg Raby (MVHS class of ’75).
This is the second time in the last six years that the Mariners have traveled out of town for game: 2013 (San Gabriel), 2014 (Bay Area/Santa Cruz), 2015 (Las Vegas), 2016 (Seattle), 2017 (Las Vegas), 2018 (San Jose/Bay Area). On this trip, the Mariners left on Wednesday morning after practicing at 6:30AM at school in order to make the 475 mile trip to the Bay Area. The Mariners stayed in Newark, CA as it was a centralized between San Francisco site-seeing and the game at San Jose High School.
On Thursday, the Mariners took in the sites of San Francisco after a morning practice. They went to Crissy Fields/Golden Gate Park, explored Pier 39/The Embarcadero, China Town, and ended with a trip to Alcatraz. On Saturday, the Mariners were able to go watch a Pac-12 vs. ACC matchup as the North Carolina Tar Heels played at Cal Berkeley. The Mariners enjoyed the pre-game atmosphere as they saw the beautiful campus of Cal Berkeley and the raucous tailgating environment. This was also great for the kids to see big-time college football and see how fast the game is really played in person, as the television does not do it justice at times.
The trip was a lot of work to plan, but it went smoothly logistically and the Mariners were a great representation for MVHS and the city of Imperial Beach the entire trip.
