Imperial Beach, CA – It is with great sadness that the South Bay Union School District Board of Trustees and Superintendent Katie McNamara announce the passing of Board Member Christine Brown. Trustee Brown left us on July 18, 2018, following an illness.
"We are deeply saddened by Chris’ passing," stated Board President Melanie Ellsworth. “Our dear Chris was a dedicated and engaged Board Member who, in her nearly 17 years on the Board, made numerous contributions to the benefit of our students, parents, staff and community. She was an elected official that really cared about the people she represented and she spent a great deal of time talking to and assisting students, parents, and families. On behalf of the South Bay Union School District, we extend our deepest sympathies to the Brown family and Chris’ many friends and colleagues.”
Trustee Brown began her career in South Bay in 1984 as a substitute Instructional Assistant. During her time with the District as an employee, she held positions in Special Education and Student Support and Accountability. She was elected to the South Bay Board in 2002 and successfully ran for reelection three times. She was a steadfast supporter of the District and was devoted to the community she served. In addition to her service as a Board Member, Trustee Brown also worked as a Senior Volunteer for the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. In 2015, she received an “Outstanding Women Honoree Award” from Senator Ben Hueso in recognition of her selfless commitment and loyalty to our community.
Superintendent McNamara shared her thoughts about Trustee Brown, “She was a dedicated public official who leaves a legacy of service, generosity, and genuine caring for our community. In her role as an advocate, she was committed to ensuring the best possible education for the students in our District. Chris was more than a colleague, she was a friend. We will miss our matriarch and Georgia peach." There will be a Celebration of Life for Christine Brown on Friday, July 27 at 4:00 PM in Burress Auditorium (601 Elm Avenue in Imperial Beach). Please RSVP to Amy Cooper at firstname.lastname@example.org or (619) 628-1605.
