On hand for the event was State Senator Ben Hueso, State Assemblymember Todd Gloria, and State Senator President Pro Temp Toni Atkins who formally represented Imperial Beach who were all instrumental in getting the funding approved at the State level along with Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina who several meeting with Senator Hueso about ways to get funds for the Pool and had even traveled to Sacramento to help lobby for the funds on behalf of the Imperial Beach residents. Also present at the Press Conference were IB City Council Member Ed Spriggs and City Manager Andy Hall. On hand also were several important people from the Sweetwater Union School District who played key roles Including, but not limited to, Paula Hall, Sweetwater Union High School District School Board President, and Area 5 Trustee; Dr. Karen Janney, Sweetwater Union High School District Superintendent; and Rich Carreon, Mar Vista High School Principal.
Everyone at the Press Conference was very excited about the new pool. Earlier in the year rumors began the school district might close the pool. . Paula Hall, President of the SUHSD said, This was really a team effort. (referring to the School District, Mayor and the City and Senator Hueso, Representative Gloria and Speaker Pro Tem Atkins). Everyone came together and did a great thing for not only the students of Mar Vista but also the district and especially the residents of Imperial Beach. Everyone realized how important the pool is to the community. Rich Carreon, Mar Vista Principal said,“This is an exciting time for our MVH students and the community of Imperial Beach. It is great to see good people come together for a common purpose.”
At this time it is not known when groundbreaking for the new pool will begin. The new 50-meter state of the art pool and facilities will be built in the same location as the current pool and will have all new facilities and better access to the pool. There will be a year where students will have to travel to another pool to compete and practice. The Pool is expected to be completed by the end of 2020 or 2021 depending on when groundbreaking begins.
