As South Bay Urgent Care Approaches it's 1 Year Anniversary, It Has Already Made a Big Impact on Community

When
South Bay Urgent Care (SBUC), located at 1628 Palm Avenue, held their Grand Opening on May 31st of last year, it was a dream come true for Matt and Kimberly Dickson. The Imperial Beach couple always wanted to open a medical practice in the beach community they call home.  They wanted to give back to the community where they are raising their daughter Annie and son Bradford. Luckily for us, Imperial Beach was the community they chose.

Dr. Kim and Dr. Matt invested 2 years of time and a lot of hard work and love into building a 7,500-sq. ft. urgent care facility.  SBUC boast a modern nurse’s station with electronic medical records, a well-equipped procedure room, 8 large exam room rooms, along with the on-site lab and x-ray imaging.

During all of this, South Bay Urgent Care has been heavily involved in giving back to the community. Their facility is filled with art by local artists, including William Willis. They
have supported many local programs in the community, said Tyler Arciaga, Athletic Director at Mar Vista High School, "South Bay Urgent Care has been a tremendous supporter of Mar Vista Athletics during their first year in business. ... Their willingness to open their doors to Mar Vista is incredibly generous."  They have begun the tradition of providing the Mar Vista athletes with low-cost “sports pre-participation physicals,” and generously donate all the proceeds back to support the athletic programs.

Their most famous employee is Rusty, a 10 year old Labrador retriever mix.  He “goes to work” most days with Dr. Matt and Dr. Kim, and usually can be found relaxing in the back office area.   He is a big hit with all the patients.   Both patients and staff find comfort in having him in the office. He relieves the anxiety and fear that some children have during a medical appointment.  Patients frequently return and “request” to see Rusty, and sometimes bring him treats and gifts.

South Bay Urgent Care accepts a wide variety of insurance plans including Medicare, Tricare, and recently added Molina and CHG.  They are in the process of becoming part of the Sharp Community Group network. They have minimal wait times and have affordable self-pay rates for those patients without insurance, at a cost that is a small fraction compared to an ER visit.

SBUC has filled a big void in our community. Before their opening, to receive many of the services which they provide patients would travel outside of IB, and were faced with long waits.  South Bay Urgent Care is open 7 days a week for minor emergencies, no appointment necessary. SBUC has on-site X-ray & lab services with a professional, courteous staff in a very clean, modern, custom built facility.
