Imperial Beach, CA – South Bay Union School District recently participated in a study on Measuring Innovation in Education: Access to 21st Century Skills in San Diego Schools. The study was conducted by the Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Education, a non-profit, university-based research center at the School of Leadership and Education Sciences at the University of San Diego.
The Study focused on measuring how South Bay is performing compared to other regional school districts when equating opportunities for students to engage in 21st Century skills. Two other elementary school districts were included in the Study, one in South County and the other in North County. Students in grades five and eight at Emory, Imperial Beach Charter, and Nicoloff Schools were asked the following questions:
How would you describe your school?
When was the last time that you did something creative in your school?
When was the last time you did something that required you to learn or do a project in a new way at your school?
When was the last time you had to think hard to solve a problem in your school work that was challenging?
The Study findings demonstrate that South Bay is excelling at providing students opportunities to engage in 21st Century skills, especially critical thinking, collaboration and self-directed learning. Students indicated that they have multiple opportunities to compare information from different places, websites or books; share numbers, facts or information and explain why they are important; summarize what they have learned; compare different opinions, perspectives or ideas; and write essays or arguments using evidence.
Dr. McNamara is proud of the Study results. “The analysis done by USD is evidence that our district’s focus on literacy, stamina, perseverance, creativity, and teamwork is positively impacting students. I am particularly proud that the researchers noted high rates of joy in our District. I congratulate our Board of Trustees, administrators, and instructional team for their dedication to ensuring that our students are prepared for future education and careers.”
