Mar Vista Baseball Team Starts the Season Strong. with 15 Wins vs Only 5 Losses

The 2018 Mar Vista High School Baseball team is very strong. They have a record of 15 wins and 5 losses. We have played in three tournaments and finished well in all three. The Sweetwater Invitational found the Mariners finishing 4 and 1 only to find themselves out of the championship game by process of elimination. There were 2 other teams with identical records and the tiebreaker was the least amount of runs scored against you and we lost out by 2 runs more scored against us. In The Lions Tournament, we finished 3 wins and no losses in Pool Play. Then lost in the Semi Final 4 to 2 to eventual Tournament Division 4A Winner San Pasqual High School. In the Grossmont, Metro, City Tournament.  The Mariners finished 4 wins and 1 Loss but was beat out of the Championship by the runs against rule again.

First up was Chula Vista Charter. MV defeated CVC 10 to 0. Along the way, the Mariners split a doubleheader with the Coronado Islanders baseball team. Both games were thrillers as the scores were 2 to 1 Islanders and 4 to 3 Mariners. Followed by a Loss to Classical Academy 10 to 6 and a Win against High Tech High San Diego 7 to 6.

Mar Vista returns 7 lettermen from the 2017 team. They are, Junior second baseman Zach Hastings, Seniors: Centerfielder/Pitcher Daniel Ortiz, Shortstop/Pitcher Eli Burns, DH/Outfielder Zach Rall, Right Hand Pitcher Sean Jones, 2nd Team All South Bay League First baseman/Pitcher Eddie King and 1st Team All South Bay League and Player of the Year, Jake Borst. New comers are Sophomore Diego Garza and Senior Armando Garza, Juniors, Cesar Luna, Alonso Garcia, Jeremy Longworth, Damon Thomas, Chris Pardinas, Cesar Macias, Jason Capron and Isaac Guerrero. New Seniors are Isaac Castellon and Victor Herrera.

As of this writing, the Mariners started League play with a 4 to 3 win over a very stubborn Sweetwater Red Devils team. It was a come from behind win with a walk-off base hit by Junior Right Fielder Jeremy Longworth driving in Eddie King with the winning run. Eli Burns led off the 7th inning with a double. Eddie King and Jake Borst drew walks. Isaac Guerrero grounded out to shortstop to tie the game. Isaac Castellon grounded out to the pitcher holding the runners to their bases. Zach Hastings was hit by a pitch setting the stage for Longworth who hit the first pitch for his game-winning single.

Mar Vista will travel to Sweetwater on Thursday to complete the 2 game series. Next week the Mariners will entertain the Castle Park Trojans I n a 2 game series Tuesday @ CPH and Thursday will be a home game.

We would love to have the community come out and cheer us on and support us throughout the season. The Snack Bar will be open. So come on out and have a hot dog or nachos and watch exiting Mariner baseball.
