South Bay Union School District Enters Partnership with United Through Reading (UTR) Which Offers Service to Military Members

Parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts - who are deployed or otherwise separated from their families, the opportunity to be video recorded reading a story aloud to their children.

Superintendent's Message

Dear South Bay Parents/Guardians and Community Members,

We are excited to announce that South Bay Union has entered into a partnership with United Through Reading (UTR) to be a host site for their program. Please click here for more information about UTR, which offers military service members - parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts - who are deployed or otherwise separated from their families, the opportunity to be video recorded reading a story aloud to their children. The recording session is then burned onto a DVD and given to the family so it can be watched whenever the children need some focused time with their loved one. Imperial Beach Charter School is only the second elementary school to act as a host site for UTR.

UTR is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) public benefit organization that has served military families for more than 28 years. UTR's mission is to unite military families facing physical separation by facilitating the bonding experience of reading aloud together. UTR offers service members the opportunity to be video-recorded reading storybooks to their children at home which eases the stress of separation, maintains positive emotional connections, and cultivates a love of reading and early childhood literacy. Since inception, more than 2 million military parents, spouses, and children have benefited from the program.

If there is a service member in your family who will be deployed or otherwise separated soon and would like to take part, please email the following information to acooper@sbusd.org:
  • Parent Name
  • Student Name
  • Student Home School
  • Parent Phone Number
You will be contacted by our parent coordinator, Amy Cooper, to arrange a filming session not to exceed thirty minutes. There will be assorted books available to choose from for reading, but you are free to bring a favorite book from home. Filming will always be done in private, and will take place in the Imperial Beach Charter School Library.

We are pleased to offer this opportunity to our military families. Thank you for your service and support of South Bay!

Sincerely,
Katie McNamara, Superintendent
South Bay Union School District
