Nov 12, 2017 11:23PM ● By Paul Spear

The Imperial Beach Community Came Out and Showed their Support for Our Military as they Honored Retired and Active Military and their Families at IB's Military Appreciation Day on Saturday!

The Third Annual Imperial Beach Military Appreciation Day was a community-wide fun event

and open to everybody. The community came out on Saturday as paid tribute to retired, active military and their families on Saturday afternoon on another beautiful day in Imperial Beach.

The City of Imperial Beach began the special event in 2015 to recognize our military community members and their families. In 2016, the Imperial Beach Chamber of Commerce, Business Improvement District, and business leaders teamed with the three local Veteran’s organizations to continue the tradition. The Fleet Reserve Association Branch 289, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5477 and American Legion Post 820 were all major participants in the planning and conduct of this very family oriented celebration. Also, playing a big role in honoring our troop was the Imperial Beach Women's Club was out in force and brought 1,000 Christmas cards for community members to sign so they could be sent to the men and women protecting our country around the globe!

The music was great as Dunes Park was filled with people enjoying the fun, food and music. The live music began at noon with Catie + Kevin in their first performance in Imperial Beach since this summer when their great acoustic concert was halted right after it started at the Farmer’s Market due to noise complaints. It was great to have them with us. They put on a full performance this time. You can check them out at

At 1:30, Velvet Cafe performed a set of blues and rock standards that was inspiring as well as fun! They played last year, and it was great to have them back. At 3:00, Imperial Beach’s own Coral Bells Band took the stage. Their high energy acoustic Americana set list never fails to wow the crowd. Wonderful to have this great band back with us this year.

The FRA, VFW and American Legion joined together in providing the “cook-out” for the event. Hamburgers, hot dogs, etc. The food was free, and people were free to donate, or not, if they so desired.

The Kids Zone will included a bounce house and kids games were be provided by the Boys and

Girls Club of South County.

Bull Pen Tavern ran the beer garden. Special thanks to Evan Penhasi and his great crew for that.

Some of the other community exhibitions included the IB Historical Society, South Bay Urgent Care and the IB Cub and Boy Scouts Troop 866.

The city of Imperial Beach, the Community and the organizations in the community were honored to recognize and celebrate the important contributions of our IB military community. It was a fun and well attended afternoon for the entire family! If you were unfortunate and missed this event you will want to make sure you leave the date open next year as it's always a great time for the entire family at Military Appreciation Day!
