The Chamber, which holds a Networking Breakfast on the last Thursday of every month, which is open to the public, had South Bay Union School District Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Katie McNamara as their guest speaker in September.
She did an excellent job of informing everything going on in the district, the great programs going on in the schools and the challenges the district faces. While speaking she also presented slides to go with her talk.
Per the Superintendent, the School District is comprised of nine K - 6th Elementary Schools,
two K - 8th Grade Charter Schools, with one Preschool, and three Satellite Preschool sites. The district was established in 1920 and serves a population of 75,000 people covering Imperial Beach, South San Diego, and San Ysidro. Dr McNamara said that they currently serve about 8,000 students including preschoolers and have an operating budget of over $71 million. They have 950 Certified and Classified employees.
One of the things stressed in the presentation are the diverse conditions they must deal with. The Schools are comprised of 83.2% Hispanic students, 6.8% White, 3.6% Filipino, 2.8% African American and 2.5% of two or more races. Of these around half are English learners and 45% of the students receive lunch free or at a reduced price.
The current School Board of Trustees are: Melanie Ellsworth, President: Chris Brown, Vice President: Elvia Aguilar, Clerk: and members Barbara Elliot-Sanders and Cheryl Quinios.
I've included same of the presentation as photos if you would like to learn more about the South Bay Union School District.
Some of the special programs are offered at Bayside STEAM Academy, which focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. Nestor Language Academy which teaches them in both Spanish and English. Sunnyslope School were the focus is to teach the children while transforming them to learn in English from their native language.
Dr. McNamara put on a very informative and excellent presentation!
