Mariners Football Team Upsets Previously Undefeated Friday Night 28 - 21!

Sep 24, 2017 04:41PM ● By Paul Spear

The Mar Vista Mariners Football Team Knocked Off Previously Undefeated University City 28-21 to Improve to 3 -2 on the Year while the Centurions are now 4 - 1 in a Non-Conference Game Played at University High School.

Mar Vista quarterback Jacob Beck had a great game leading the Mariners to their third win of the season. He ran for 3 touchdowns and handed off to Junior Tasi Sablan for the other touchdown for all of the Mariner touchdowns in the game. However, it was an outstanding job by the whole team that got the Mariners the win. The offense, defense and special team units all had outstanding games.

Said Mariner Head Football Coach, Tyler Arciaga, "Our offense did a nice job sustaining drives and limiting turnovers." He continued saying, "Our special teams made several big plays including a blocked PAT and a free kick recovery on a free kick after the safety (we punted the ball and our guys knew that it was a live/recoverable ball once it passed 10 yards)."

1st Quarter
The Centurions from University City got the scoring going in the game scoring a safety for 2 points and held the lead at the end of the first quarter Leading Mar Vista 2-0

2nd Quarter
But Mar Vista came back with two touchdowns by Quarterback Beck in the Second Quarter to take a 14 to 2 lead at halftime. One touchdown was scored on a quarterback sneak and Beck ran the other one in from 2 yards out as he faked a handoff to Sablan and ran the ball in off the fake.

3rd Quarter
University City narrowed the lead in the Third Quarter with a touchdown to close the lead but the Mar Vista Mariners still lead 14 - 8 after 3 quarters.

4th Quarter
At the start of the 4th quarter Junior Running Back, Tasi Sablan, ran the ball in from 3 yards out to give the Mariners a 21 to 8 lead with just 1 minute into the 4th quarter. The University City Centurions from narrowed the lead in the 4th quarter but Beck scored his 3rd touchdown of the game with 3:11 remaining in the game and the Mariners held off a late University City scored to win 28 to 21 and knock off the previously undefeated Centurions.

The Mariners have been playing very good football as of late winning 3 out of their last 4 games with their only loss coming in a game where they traveled to Las Vegas to play Friday night only to have the game delay until the next day to a lightening storm. Last week they knocked off rival Coronado 34 - 10 after their tough loss 17 -12 to Bonanza High in Las Vegas. The game before that they defeated Castle Park 34 to 0 in a game in which Josh Beck, their quarterback, was named as one of the Union Tribune Athletes of the Week.

The Mar Vista varsity football team will play next this Friday, September 29th at 7pm in a non-conference game vs. Santana High School at Mar Vista High School.

Be sure to catch the video highlights from the game provided by the Mar Vista High School Football Team. A special "Thank you" to MVHS Athletic Director & Head Football Coach, Tyler Arciaga, and everyone at MVHS who has been so helpful with our articles!
