Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! As school resumes, I want to thank you for your support in ensuring that your child attends school every day. One important factor in student achievement is attendance and even a few days of absence in an academic year may impact future success. We thank you for your commitment and our teachers and staff are excited to assist your child in attaining their achievement goals.
This year, South Bay will expand the commitment to innovation and creativity that we launched last year. Currently, all students (TK-8) have access to technology each and every day at school. We will be piloting a program this year at a few schools to allow students to take their devices home, ensuring that they have 24/7 access to learning resources, information, and much more.
We will continue to provide students opportunities to be creative and to showcase their work during Genius Hour and at the Innovation Expo. We are also working on extending instruction in computer science/coding to all South Bay students.
Our focus on reading to ensure that all students are reading at grade level by the third grade will continue this year. This is important because strong reading ability is the foundation for future success in school, college, and beyond. Our instructional team will expand our partnership with Columbia University's Teachers College and continue to closely monitor the reading progress of all students throughout the year. We hope that you will join us as partners in this goal by asking your child's teacher about reading progress and by encouraging reading at home.
On behalf of our entire team, we are excited to have you in South Bay and look forward to making this school year a great one for our students and families. Thank you for your support and partnership in your child's education journey. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. I can be reached by email or by phone at (619) 628-1605.
Katie McNamara, Ed.D.
