Here is a review of how the Mar Vista Varsity Baseball Team has done during the past 2 weeks. It starts 2 weeks ago and moves to present date as you get towards the bottom of the article.
MVH started hot in LIONS club tournament but fell to San Dieguito 1 to 0 and 3 to 1 to eventual Div. 3A Champion Serra High School. Sr. pitcher Christian De La Torre tossed a No Hitter through 5 innings of work against the Mustangs of San Dieguito. The Mariner defense came through strong turning 3 double plays in helping “DLT” and Jr. Daniel Ortiz who came in to pitch the 6th inning. Jr. Eddie King took the loss in another heartbreaking loss for the Mariners. The Mustangs scored the winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning on a walk off single.
The next game Mar Vista's defense shined again turning 2 more double plays for Jr. pitcher Sean Jones who threw 5 strong innings against LIONS Club Division 3A Champion Serra High. Jr. Eddie King drove in the lone Mariner run after Sr. Mike Wilson drew a 1 out walk. King hit the first pitch deep into the right centerfield gap for a double scoring Wilson but that was all the offense the Mariners could muster up against a tough Serra pitching staff.
Monday, April 17th, Mar Vista resumed league play visiting the Mater Dei Crusaders. The Mariners entered the contest 3 and 0 in league tied for 1st place with Chula Vista High. Things didn’t bode well for Mar vista as they fell to the Crusaders 18 to 5. MVH caught a break after learning Chula Vista High School also lost setting up a showdown for 1st place at the Spartan home field . On, Wednesday, both teams entered the contest with 3 – 1 records. Mar Vista scored first scoring 1 run in the 1st inning but base running mistakes and some errors cost the Mariners. Chula Vista High (CVH) eventually won the battle 5 to 1. The Mariners had several chances to get back into the game but couldn’t capitalize on them. The Mariners banged out 9 hits but just couldn’t get the timely hit they needed to. The lose dropped the Mariners record in league to 3 - 2 for their Friday rematch.
A win Friday, (April 21st) in their rematch vs CVH could have but the Mariners back into a first place tie with a victory but it wasn't in the cards. 4 straight walks in the first inning by starting pitcher Elijah Burns, set the stage for CVH scoring 4 runs in the first inning before the Mariners ever came to bat. CVH went 5 - 0 adding another run in the 3rd inning driving Burns from the game as the Mariners brought in Eddie King. Mar Vista finally got on the scoreboard when junior catcher, Jake Borst, hit a towering home run over the left field fence and narrowing the score to 5 - 1. Despite Kings 4 2/3 shutout innings the Mariners didn't score anymore runs and dropped to 3 - 3 in league play and are now 2 games behind Chula Vista High who is now 5 - 1 in league.
Next week the Mariners are off and return to play on Wednesday May 3rd at Castle Park. they will return home Friday, May 5th, and will play Castle Park again.
