March may be “madness” for college basketball fans, but for the boxing community in Imperial Beach the hype was surrounded by The Down 2 Pound “Sparring Event” held by the Boys & Girls Club of South County. The spectacle was held at the Sports Park Recreation Center with more than 225 people in attendance during the four-hour event. “It was exciting to see how many people who live outside of Imperial Beach, let alone San Diego County, attended the event. To put on display a great event at an unknown venue, for most who attended, is a great thing for the community of Imperial Beach,” said Program Director Bowe Fertig.

A Boxing event isn’t a great event without exceptional talent, delicious food, live entertainment, and prizes combined with great people. There were fifteen sparring exhibitions comprised of boys and girls from six different gyms ranging from youth to teens. Fuegos Bar & Grill provided mouth-watering tacos, pulled pork sandwhiches, and elote (corn on the cobb). The audience was moving and grooving to the jams of DJ Daniel Gee on the 1’s and 2’s. There were T-shirts raffled along with a brand new pair of boxing gloves.  The icing on the cake, however, was the involvement of Former Miss California Latina Karina Heredia and Professional Ring Announcer Fernando “Crimedog” Lara. Heredia took part in the preliminary activities of weigh-ins and face off. She was also the Ring Girl who was a part of the ceremonial post-fight medals given to the fighters.

All of this could not have been done without HomeTeam’s Boxing Xavi Castillo Ruiz and Claudia Gasca. “They were instrumental to the success of this event,” said Fertig. Like Ruiz, the real champions are the coaches and parents who have put the time and effort in creating positive atmospheres for our youth. In providing boxing as an avenue, we are strengthening our youth both mentally and physically.

Also a BIG THANK YOU to Steve Berry of IB Printing and Deb's Cookies for supporting the Boys & Girls Club and providing the Round Cards.
