Citizens Respond to Call for Letter Writing to State Government Officials to Demand Action After Massive Sewage Spill Pollutes Estuary and Miles of Beaches.
effort to get Government Officials to pay attention to the current and ongoing
sewage crisis we experience here in Imperial Beach and our neighbors to the
north in Coronado, San Ysidro, Chula Vista and others, The South Bay Clean
Water Movement, set up a letter writing tent at the IB Pier.
It was apparent that there are many angry and frustrated Residents of Imperial Beach and the South Bay who want the Government to investigate and stop this sewage problem from happening again.
I walked along the beach and the Pier and our normally populated beach was empty of people enjoying the water and none of our regular surfing community members could be found. The pollution signs were the predominant presence. There were some people walking along the beach and taking photos but not venturing into the water. Please see the Gallery photos.
There are major health concerns caused by the raw sewage and trash flowing to our communities from Mexico via the Tijuana River. This is not a new issue but the current spill is the largest, perhaps even ever, that has occurred with over 143,000,000 gallons spilled into the Estuary and our beaches for 20 mile from IB northward.
The raw sewage has the potential of seriously
impacting human health causing serious illness. The animal and plant
species are also being impacted and Imperial Beach is home to numerous Birds
and plant life which are endangered. This is a critical nesting area and
the damage to our Estuary, which is one of the most significant Estuarine sites
in the US, will have the potential of destroying the eggs and nestlings beyond
