On Sunday, Former Star Players from Mariner's Alumni Turned Out to Play
MVHS Baseball Team in an Alumni Fundraising Game. It was a perfect day for baseball. Spring was in the air and the start of baseball always reminds us that summer is just around the corner. I had a great time watching the players from the past, eating some great hamburgers off the barbeque and talking with the players as I got there photos.I met some awesome new friends as well. The former Mariner Alumni were there to help the currant team raise funds for all the needed supplies they no longer receive due to school budget cuts across California. Everyone there had a super time and the stands and grounds were filled with spectators.
After warmup, it was team photo time and then Joe O’Connor from the “Scoreboard threw out the first pitch and the game was underway and it was time to "Play Ball"
Some, but not all, of the former Mariner Alumni star players from the past included: Bobby Rector, Jake Meyer, Rick Quinones, Slater Putland, Miguel Rico, Charlie Padilla, Jose Pompa, Jorge Garcia, Rick Wilson, Allan Delosreyes jr, Fabian Casio sr. and jr., Dave Wilkins, Josh Burns, David Apodaca, James Davis, Devon Felkner, and Ron Lee.
Coach Allan De Los Reyes put out a statement saying: Another game has come and gone. The 2017 game is in the books. Thanks to all who showed up and played yet another great game of baseball between the Alums and the Varsity!! And a very special thanks to the spectators – hope you enjoyed the day and thank you for your support of Mar Vista baseball. Without you the baseball program would not be as it is today. Your generous donations and participation in our fundraiser has helped keep this program going. A great time was had by all and a special thank you to all who contributed and to the folks who helped run this event!! And a tremendous job by our announcer, Coach Jacinto Perez! Once again I hope you enjoyed the day, seeing old friends and classmates talking of times gone by and exchanging memories! A few ex-pro players, former college players and guys still playing ball out of sheer enjoyment of the game. Playing together like at an old time family get together competing with the up and coming regime. Laughing and carrying on. Many new faces and many familiar faces in the stands. What a great atmosphere is was. Special thanks to Joe O’Connor from the “Scoreboard” who threw out the traditional first pitch. To Bobby Rector for playing in all eleven games and still looks just as good as when he was in high school. To Esteban Loaiza for a guest appearance. The former major leaguer and All Star game MVP, along with Ex pros Jake Meyer, Bobby Rector talking baseball with the Mar Vista Kids. Thanks to all the local Businesses who donated and supported MVH Baseball. Scoreboard, Katy’s Café, Surf Hut, Filippi’s Pizza, All American Deli, Deb’s Cookie Jar, I B Printing, Baja Oyster and Sushi Bar, Boll Weevil, Coronado Brewing Company and The Riverwalk Golf Club. On behalf of the Mariner Baseball Team and Coaching Staff we thank you and hope to see you next year!! Oh, by the way, did everyone see the base hit by Coach Jacinto Perez? Thank You, Allan Delos Reyes (Coach “D”) Head Coach Mar Vista Baseball.
I want to thanks all of the players and there family and friends from the alumni and the currant players for all of there help they gave me and specifically: Coach De Los Reyes and Bobby Rector for there help in putting this article together.
