San Diego World Affairs Council Presents

2017: A Year of Choices, Challenges, and Opportunities – for America … and the World

The San Diego World Affairs Council welcomes retired Vice Admiral Charles W. Martoglio, former deputy commander of the U.S. European Command and an expert on foreign affairs and national security, for a talk entitled, “2017: A Year of Choices, Challenges, and Opportunities – for America . . . and the World." 

Adm. Martoglio will discuss the global security situation, the potential impact of world events at home and abroad, and how the United States can use its influence to ensure a secure and prosperous future.  He will also discuss why America is likely to remain the world’s preeminent power for decades to come.

About Our Speaker

Adm. Martoglio’s long and distinguished leadership career with the U.S. Navy included command of the USS Fitzgerald during the ship’s first deployment to the Persian Gulf in 1997 and sea combat command of the Nimitz Strike Group during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Adm. Martoglio also commanded Carrier Strike Group Seven and the Ronald Reagan Strike Group during its 2007 deployment in the Western Pacific.

In addition to five tours of duty at the Pentagon, he has served in Asia, the Middle East, and, prior to his 2014 retirement, in Hawaii as Director of Operations at the U.S. Pacific Command and in Germany as Deputy Commander of the U.S. European Command. He is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Naval War College.

Considered one of the nation’s top strategic thinkers on defense matters, Adm. Martoglio is currently a senior research fellow at UC San Diego and an adviser to the Department of Defense. He and his wife, Darlene, a former commercial banking executive, live in San Diego and are active in community affairs.
