The South Bay Show Crowned Champs

Dec 02, 2016 12:12PM ● By Bowe Fertig

The Men's Basketball Champion of the Summer-Fall Season was crowned Tuesday as The South Bay Show defeated the Head Hunters 62-55.

The Show ended the regular season, 7-1, as the No.1 seed and finished the season 9-1. Led by Manager Javier Sanchez, The Show put on a great display of old-school, half-court basketball with strong-gritty play down low.  With their average age of 37, they showed that fundamental basketball can overcome long-shooting-street ball.

The Show jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead as the Head Hunters responded with three 3’s to tie the game at 9 six minutes into the game. The first half would go back and forth with the Show leading at Halftime 32-29.

The second half would be much of the same as the Head Hunters led by Manager Eric Montgomery would hit their outside shots in spurts but without any consistency. Defensively, The Show would give up outside shots but wouldn’t allow second chance opportunities off the glass. Demarco Sampson of the Head Hunters had been difficult to guard all season long with his length and quickness and The Show did just enough to contain him.

The No.3 seed Head Hunters defeated last season’s Champions Buckets in the semi-final game to reach the ship. Montgomery and Elijah Davis Jr. were second and third on the season with the most three-pointers made (53 and 51) trailing No Limit’s Wooda Steward’s league leading 55 3’s. Sampson also contributed as a key piece of their offense averaging 20 points during the regular season.

Congratulations to The South Bay Show and all the other teams who contributed to another successful Men’s Basketball League at the Boys & Girls Club of South County.
