Super simple and delicious Homemade Sloppy Joes, all that great flavor but customized to your own taste and items you have on hand!
1 Lb of hamburger or beef strips (this is what I used for this recipe)
1 medium onion, chopped
2 Tbs butter, or oil
1 bell pepper green, red, orange or yellow or even a combination for lovely color!
4 cloves garlic, chopped or thinly sliced
1 14 oz can of diced tomatoes
1 15 oz can of tomato sauce
1 can Sloppy Joe sauce
salt, pepper and chili powder to taste
Optional: diced chilies, sliced black olives, diced pimentos, finely shredded carrots
1. saute hamburger or beef strips and spices in butter or oil with the onions and pepper, until cooked and onions are clear
2. drain meat and add the tomatoes, tomato sauce and Sloppy Joe sauce (and additional optional items you like), and simmer until sauce thickens
*Note: If sauce is too thick add water until desired thickness is reached
3. let rest for 5 minutes, then pile mixture high on some large soft burger buns and serve.
Feel free to add veggie chips or Fritos as an accompaniment with a glass of iced tea or lemonade. There are so many kinds of buns available, choose which you like best, the size is up to you from regular to jumbo. I like the large sesame seed buns, the onion buns or Kings Hawaiian buns for a special treat! Now you can sit back and wait for the compliments and satisfied "umm" sounds from your family!
Remember to always cook with love, buy locally and fresh is best. Linda
P.S. Most of the ingredients used in my recipes are taken from the commodities provided from the Food Bank
