Traffic Comes to a Standstill Along the Silver Strand Between Imperial Beach and the Naval Amphibious Base Coronado Causing Major Delays for Commuters.
The Silver Strand is the only route to the Naval Amphibious Base (NAB) from Imperial Beach and the Coronado Cays. The morning delays have reached record proportions up to 45-minute travel times from Imperial Beach (IB) and the Cays. The Issue has been taken up by Daron Case, "The Captain of the Cays", a resident of the Cays and renown Photographer and Surfer who has started a petition to require CalTrans, the Navy and the Coronado City Council to take immediate action to rectify the serious problem.
The Residents of IB, the Cays and Coronado are infuriated by the serious delays, experienced Monday through Thursday between the hours of 6am and 8am, The problem has been getting consistently worse over the past few years with increased traffic and a growing population of the areas.
The latest information states that CalTrans is performing a Cost Analysis and Timeline Estimate for the implementation of Adaptive Signaling at the most congested parts of the Strand. This is the ideal long-term solution but there is no clearly defined endpoint to completion as of this posting. CalTrans also presented a short-term solution will be the placement of Coronado Police Department (CPD) Officers at those same points to make sure the flow is maintained and eliminate issues. The City of Coronado has the authority to implement this immediately.
There is also another problem area which has been identified which could be acted upon involving the Navy and how it schedules personnel. The Navy has scheduled "Flex" hours on Fridays and there are no traffic problems at all. It would be an immediate resolution to the traffic problem if the Navy implements this scheduling.
Another solution is to utilize the Shoulder lane along the Strand to ease the backup traffic problem during rush hour traffic.
There have been other posted complaints from the commuters along the Strand: "Coronado WORST traffic all week!! Traffic stopped at 8:04 Strand at Lowes"
An open invitation has been directed to Mayor Casey Tanaka, Carrie Downey and Richard Bailey to implement the CPD presence and to communicate with the Navy for talks about the Flex staffing and any other ideas for a combined effort to eliminate this serious problem.
