Ribbon Cutting for New Crosswalk at 13th St & Grove Ave Marks IB Mayor's Goal to Improve Children's Safety. The New Crosswalk at 13th Street & Grove Avenue is Just One of the Many More Crosswalks IB Mayor Serge Dedina has Promised the Citizens of Imperial BeachWith the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at the intersection of 13th Street and Grove Avenue for a new crosswalk. IB Mayor Serge Dedina again stressed, as he has been every were he goes, how dedicated he is to children's safety and that making our streets safe for them, and the families of Imperial Beach, is one of his primary goals. He referenced the improvements made to paving the alleys around Bayside and Central Schools, the continued work that will be done on 13th Street and working at IB Elementary.
IB Mayor Serge Dedina started the ceremony speaking very emotionally about how he grew up near this intersection and roamed the streets around the area with lifetime friend Captain Robert Stabenow of the IB Lifeguards as children and how much this crosswalk meant to him. He then went on to say " ...we know how important it is to make sure that every street, every block and every neighborhood in IB gets the same great treatment, and more importantly, to make sure that every kid, and all their families, and all their friends, can walk safely and securely to school. There is nothing more important than that in Imperial Beach than our commitment to kids and families ...".
He was sure to "Thank" all the city departments that help protect children's safety as well as the educators such as Melanie Ellsworth and Chris Brown two popular trustees of the SBUSD Board. Chris got a chance to address the audience and you can see the video of her speaking below.
Also on hand were some children from the student body at Oneonta Elementary and principle, Marla Fernandez, who addressed the audience along with student, Lila, from Oneonta Elementary who got to say a few words to the audience and will be using the crosswalk to go and come home from school every day. (We have both Principle Fernandez and Lila on the first Video below with IB Mayor Serge Dedina). Note: Our last video shows the students from Oneonta crossing the street with Mayor Dedina. Principle Fernandez said that around 100 students cross the street at 13th Street and Grove Avenue. Thus pointing out the importance of a safe crosswalk in the community for them.
