Long Before the Petco Surfdog Competition there was “DC and Max”. DC and Max started surfing together in 1974 at Punta Baja and even had a Guest Appearance on TV's Amazing Animals. DC's Surfboard and Story can be found on the wall at the Dempsey Holder Safety Center.

David Chalmers aka DC and his dog Max started surfing together in 1974. According to an old newspaper article while on a surf trip to Punta Baja DC took his dog Max with him.  Per DC, he got tired of listening to Max howl while he was out riding and when he came in a “Spur of the moment thing” he put Max on the board. He took Max out with him and Max rode on the nose of the board all the way in and that was the beginning of a love affair that lasted about 15 years when Max had his last ride in 1979.

Max’s desire to surf was perfect timing for DC and helped him get through a broken marriage per the article. DC said that when he would pick up a “short board” Max used to get mad and pout because he knew he wasn’t going surfing. He would just go curl up in a corner or something. However if DC picked up his “Long Board” Max would be running all over the yard with excitement because he knew he was going to be going surfing.

They tasted a little bit of stardom as well because of their relationship. They got to make a gust appearance and the syndicated TV Show “Amazing Animals”. They also were 2 SURFER Extras in 1977 and 1983 ad did a TV Commercial for Fruit and Berry Punch. They also had a starring role in the surfing movie “A Matter of Style”.

David, DC, took Max everywhere he went surfing. DC was quoted as saying that he and Max

surfed everywhere from Cabo San Lucas all the way up to Rincon which also happened to be where DC said they rode their biggest wave together ever. DC was quoted as saying the wave was about 5 to 6 foot and way over head.(note: in surfing they measure the size of a wave by the height at the back of the wave so a 5 or 6 foot wave would have about a 15 to 18 foot face.) DC said that they were going so fast on the wave that max was actually bouncing up and down on the board.

Per the article, this relationship provided lots of funny moments. Like the first time he tried to get a custom wetsuit for Max. He called up the first guy and right off the bat he asked if he could get a wetsuit made for Max and the guy hung up on him and when DC finally found a manufacture that would make Max a wetsuit it was so tight on his balls that Max stood up and fell right over.

There is be more to be told in this story and I am hoping this will be part 1 of 2. This is a

dedication to my very good friends David and Shawna Chalmers and a tribute his father. DC passed away 9 years ago and I want to get this posted before the surfdog competition Saturday.

DC and Max’s Surfboard is in the Surfboard Museum in the Dempsey Hold Safety Center. It hangs on the wall across the door way of Dempsey Holder’s Red Dot Surfboard. So if you ever get a chance go up and see it and you’ll have a whole new appreciation of the surfboard and I hope you remember the 2 from Imperial Beach that were the first in this area and maybe even in California or the USA and remember the two that were there first “Dc and Max”
