The Tijuana Estuary is filing Expedited Request for a 404 Permit with the California Coastal Commission that will allow them to Open Tijuana River Mouth by using Mechanical Equipment.
In speaking with Brian Collins who works at the Tijuana Estuary I was told that they are filing an Expedited Request for a 404 Permit with California Coastal Commission that will allow them to Open Tijuana River Mouth with Mechanical Equipment. Brian said he would hope to have the permit approved the week of April 18th. He said the City of IB has offered help and he is putting out requests for help as they have non of their own equipment.Brian stated also that they hope the currant rain storms may some how reopen the river mouth and they are continuing to monitor pollution levels in the Estuary. He did not expect any problems with the birds feeding grounds unless this turns into a prolonged event. He said the 404 permit request is designed to be processed quickly by the Coastal Commission when these types of events occur.
Brian also stated in our conversation that the Estuary had a long term request approved in 2011 for this type of situation but it expired last year.
We will continue to monitor this situation and keep you posted as new events occur.!
