Presurvation of IB History takes Huge Step forward as it enter talks to join South Bay Historical Society as Independent Chapter

Preservation of Imperial Beach History took a Huge Step forward this weekend as it has had discussions with joining the South Bay Historical Society as its own Independent Chapter.

With the introduction of Steven Schoenherr Professor Emeritus of History of the South Bay Historical Society to the Imperial Beach Historical Group, the preservation of Imperial Beach History made a huge leap forward in being able to not only maintain the history of Imperial Beach it has already collected but it has now has potential ways to lure more history into their collection.

If the Imperial Beach History Group goes forward and becomes its own independent chapter of the South Bay Historical Society it will be able to take on the benefits of their 503c non-profit status. This is huge in being able to raise funds and put on projects that can allow for the collection of Imperial Beach. It could even lead to, at some point, the ability for Imperial Beach to have it's own history museum.

When I spoke with her this weekend, Imperial Beach Council Member Lorie Bragg was very excited about the prospects it could bring to the collecting, display and preservation of Imperial Beach History. She thought it could even open the door to being able to raise funds to get IB its own history museum.

IB Councilman Patrick Bilbray has agreed to speak at the South Bay Historical Society's next meeting on april 21st at the Chula Vista Library.

The idea to contact Steven and the Society came to Paul Spear after he had heard Steven speak to an IB Chamber of Commerce networking breakfast about 6 months ago. Because of his time available, Paul Spear, has taken the lead in trying to organize IB's History events and get more history made available to the public. Councilwoman Lorie Bragg, has the role of being the head of the group, But at this point, no one's individual role has been set in stone and it truly has been a group effort by all involved.

If you have IB History that you would like to donate to the group or a collection you would be willing to loan, please contact Paul spear at and put "IB History" in the subject line.or call 619-844-9142 between 19am and 8pm PST.
