April 30 is Fiesta del Mar in Imperial Beach!!!

The Port of San Diego presents the City of Imperial Beach’s first ever Fiesta del Mar on Saturday, April 30 from 12 PM to 7 PM at Pier Plaza in Imperial Beach. for information about the event as it becomes available!

Imperial Beach, CA – Serge Dedina, Mayor of Imperial Beach widely known for his bi-national work with Mexico, and his passion for keeping the coastline and his city healthy, has announced the first ever Fiesta del Mar – a cross-border “Celebration of Friendship” between the cities of Imperial Beach and Rosarito Beach, Mexico -– on April 30, 2016  at Imperial Beach Pier Plaza.  The day-long, family-friendly celebration will showcase live musical acts from both the Rosarito and San Diego areas as well as interactive family activities hosted by the Boys & Girls Clubs of both cities.

Also participating will be Rosarito Beach Mayor Silvano Abarca, Mrs. Abarca, and former Secretary of Tourism Juan Tintos Funke, who now serves as a special assistant to Mayor Abarca.

Musical entertainment including performances by Todo Mundo and Jarabe Mexicano  who will perform between noon and 7 pm.  Festivities will kick off at noon with a performance by Mar Vista High School’s Ballet Folklorico Nahuatlan.

Fiesta del Mar is an exciting development resulting from the Friendship Agreement initiated by Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina, signed a friendship agreement with Rosarito Beach’s Mayor Silvano Abaca in September of 2015.   One goal of the event will be to demonstrate the City and Port’s commitment to protecting and preserving the Tidelands consisting of the city’s beach, Pier Plaza, and the Pier – and help educate the public about the vitality and natural wonders of the area.

Another goal of the celebration is to build awareness of the cultural richness of the region as it showcases cultural artisans, folkloric musical and dance groups, and culinary offerings unique to Baja California including:

  • Artists and musicians who participate in the annual Rosarito Beach ArtFest
  • Chefs who specialize in local Baja cuisine including Ken Irvine and SEA180, from Cohen Restaurant Group
  • Vintners from the Valle de Guadalupe wine country in Baja California, Mexico

“This event should certainly draw tourists to the area and help them appreciate our nearby wildlife refuges and our beautiful beaches,” explains IB Mayor Serge Dedina, “but it will also strengthen relationships for the residents of both Rosarito and IB – saluting our Latino population – on social, educational, cultural and economic levels.”

Interestingly, honor students from SDSU’s Volunteerism in the Arts will be participating in the event, led by Dr. Marion Liebowitz, Professor of Music.

“Many of our guests are actually here to do business across the border or to have a jumping off point for exploring Mexico,” explains Pier South General Manager, Tim Earp.  “It makes perfect sense for us to join this cross-border celebration.  And, of course, the theme of our restaurant is Baja Med and one of its biggest draws is the beverage program that offers such a wide array of Mexico’s award-winning wines, tequilas and craft beers.”
