San Salvador Replica

San Diego’s early history recalls the exploration of the Pacific Coast by the Spanish in search of trade routes and new lands. Perhaps the best visual reminder of that era is the newly constructed model of the San Salvador, a storied icon of Spanish influence on California now sitting at the San Diego Maritime Museum docks. Completed in September 2015, the new replica of the San Salvador is an excellent representation of the 200-ton galleon used by Spanish explorer Juan Cabrillo on his historic voyage up the Pacific Coast to become the first European to set foot in what is now the state of California in 1542.

San Salvador replica shipCommonly referred to as “California’s Mayflower,”  since it was the first European vessel to make port at what would become the city of San Diego, the San Salvador is a unique piece of California historyTo capture the spirit of the vessel, the Maritime Museum went through painstaking efforts to ensure the new replica is an authentic, symbolic piece of history that is now on display as part of the Maritime Museum of San Diego’s fleet of historic replica ships. At 92 feet long, with a main mast of 24 feet, the San Salvador’s replica is a faithful rendition of the original.

Talking a walk along the deck will transport visitors back to the age of exploration in the 16th century. Though initially powered by an auxiliary engine during her inaugural parade, the San Salvador is also sea-worthy and can sail up and down the coast as a living piece of educational history for future generations. To learn more, please visit the Maritime Museum’s website  and drop by the docks to visit the San Salvador in person!
