Those two words have long been the calling card for the United States Marine Corps, which
today is being celebrated nationwide for its 240th birthday.
In Washington, DC, the Commandant and Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps addressed Marines and cut the celebratory cake, according to the official Camp Pendleton Facebook page.
Dubbed the “West Coast’s Premiere Expeditionary Training Base,” Camp Pendletoncovers more than 125,000 acres and is situated just north of Oceanside in San Diego County.
As the world’s most famous expeditionary force, the small but mighty Marine Corps came into existence on Nov. 10, 1775, inside Philadelphia’s Tun Tavern, according to The Hill, and were known then as the “Corps of Marines.”
On Tuesday, Vice President Joe Biden tweeted: “Happy 240th birthday, @USMC. Thank you to all those who protect our nation, and our freedom #SemperFi”. He is among countless individuals who are using social media to salute, honor and give thanks to our nation’s Marines.
