The Mar Vista High School Boys and Girls Water Polo Teams are ready to Face Big Challenges this Season both in and out of the Pool. After both Teams won League Championships last year, they Look to Repeat and do Fundraising at the same time!
After finishing Mesa League with a 10 – 0 record and coming in 2nd in CIF Division 2, Coach Kavanagh, who has been coaching boys water polo at MVHS for 15 years, has 5 returning seniors. They are: Faux Mahan, Hector Ramirez, Aaron Pena and Jacques Henot, Nick Bochichio
Note: At the bottom of this article there is a MUST SEE VIDEO put together on the Water Polo Team by Shawna Chalmers.
Shawna Chalmers introduced me to Head Coach Chad Kavanagh, Assistant Coach David Chalmers and the 5 returning seniors on the team. I also became aware of some fundraising programs they were doing and the shape of today’s high school world where playing sports isn’t enough but you have to go out and do fundraising so your team has the needed necessities just to be able to play. They have put together an exceptional video that not only shows how dedicated the players are on repeating as Mesa League Champions but also explains some of the obstacles they are meeting head on in today’s world of budget cuts in education.
Here is some information the Water Polo Team faces outside of the pool: Mar Vista Water Polo is fundraising in 2015-2016 as a result of a loss of funding and worn out, broken equipment. The shots clocks will not last another season and games cannot be played without them. They cost $3,000 to replace. Additionally, participation in tournaments increases the team’s standing within the league and for CIF playoffs. The better the team does, the more scouts find out about our players. Tournament fees are no longer paid for by the ASB at Mar Vista High School and they amount to $3,200 combined for both boys and girls seasons annually. Team banquets, awards, and plaques come directly from fundraising and the cost is on average $800 each year. In addition, swim parkas keep kids warm outside the pool, reducing the sick rate amongst players but cost nearly $1,200 dollars. The generous support of parents, grandparents, and volunteers simply can’t fill the financial needs of this program alone. They need the support of the community. You can attend local events, donate directly via GoFundMe, provide support directly to the team or simply attend the games.
