In May of this year, Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina led a delegation south of the border to the Mexican community of Rosarito Beach, or Playas de Rosarito in Spanish.  Mayor Dedina was responding to an invitation from Rosarito Beach’s Mayor Silvano Abarca, who has been leading an effort to bring attention to the positive things happening in his Baja California city.  He has invited numerous dignitaries to visit his community, and traveling north to visit theirs in response.

While Rosarito is known for beachfront tourism, Rosarito Beach Mayor Abarca outlined an economic development strategy that included the city’s new regional parks, public tennis courts, urban renewal within the main tourist corridor and a new Boys and Girls Club.  In response, Imperial Beach Mayor Dedina invited Rosarito Beach Mayor Abarca to visit his city, Imperial Beach, known as the ‘most southwesterly’ city in the United States, whose boundaries approach the Mexican border.  Both cities share much in common developing a balanced community for residents, tourists, recreational facilities and a vibrant business sector.

On August 18, 2015, the Mayors on behalf of their Cities will execute a Friendship Agreement to symbolize the relationship and affinities amongst the communities and bring awareness to the opportunities within what some have called a transnational metropolis.
