South Bay Unified School District Superintendent, Dr. Katie McNamara, begins her “Monthly Column Series” to keep the Local Community informed of what’s happening in their Schools and with the students!

Superintendent McNamara’s Column – August 2015

Dear Community Members,

Welcome to the new monthly column!  I look forward to sharing education news and South Bay Union School District updates with you.  Thanks to DigImperialBeach for this opportunity!

During August 24-28, SBUSD will host CyberSmarts Week to increase student digital literacy and Internet safety awareness.  The District established this annual event for a variety of reasons including compliance with requirements of the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and the 2012 Protecting Children in the 21st Century Act to address concerns about children's access to harmful content over the Internet.  CIPA requires schools to certify that their Internet safety policies include monitoring the online activities of minors, educating minors about appropriate online behavior, including interacting with other individuals on social networking websites and in chat rooms, and cyberbullying awareness and response.

CyberSmarts Week at SBUSD includes fun and educational curriculum and activities designed for each grade level.  From helping to plan a birthday party using online tools in Kindergarten to the safe and proper use of photos online and on cellphones in 8th grade.  In addition to CyberSmarts Week activities, teachers expand on digital literacy and safety concepts throughout the school year using supplementary (iSafe) age-appropriate curriculum.  You may view important parent and family resources, including tips and free online protection tools, at our CyberSmarts Parent Page

Online safety is a high priority for all of us as our use of the Internet increases, particularly in the area of social media.  We are committed to safety for all students when they access online content.  Thank you for your support of this important initiative.

Join us in being a CyberSmartie!

Katie McNamara, Ed.D.

District Superintendent
