IB Elementry Schools in Danger of Losing Funding for Special Programs!

Jul 21, 2015 11:37PM ● By Paul Spear
mperial Beach and South San Diego Schools in Danger of Losing Funding for Special Programs! The South Bay Unified School District Educational Foundation (SBUSDEF) is considering ceasing existence due to lack of members.

The SBUSDEF is a non-profit organization that has been around for almost 15 years and is made up of all volunteers and exists to help the South Bay Unified School District. It is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization set up to help the School District with funds for school programs.
Every year the Foundation donates tens of thousands of dollars to our Imperial Beach and South San Diego Schools. This is an asset that the community cannot afford to lose! Please become involved!!!

Some of these programs include but are not limited to the following:

• Science Education

• Support of the Visual and Performing Arts

• Staff Development Scholarships

• Donations to school libraries

• Mini-grants to teachers for class projects

Here is a message delivered by Dana Tomlinson, President of the Education Foundation, describing the problem:

At our recent annual retreat, we had a long discussion about the viability of the SBUSD Education Foundation. We no longer have a trustee member as a district liaison and have had trouble retaining Directors due to everyone’s very busy schedules.  All of the 6 of the 8 remaining members present felt that what we do is important to the students and staff of the district – we provide the support for programs and/or materials that would otherwise not be obtained and, therefore, the students would be losing out on those amazing opportunities like Sea Camp, Biztown, etc. So, we have decided to attempt to persevere, HOWEVER, we are letting everyone know now that if the Foundation does not acquire more support in the form of Directors and “friends” of the Foundation to help at events, this will be its last year. This is not a threat – it is a reality – we are all volunteers, and almost all of us work full time and we just can’t do it all – as evidenced by the fact that we have so many folks who don’t stay on our board for very long. We invite anyone to join us and bring your insight and input and energy. Contact us at
