Jul 21, 2015 01:24AM ● By Paul Spear

Get pumped, Get Ready – LET’s RELAY!!   Our Hometown RELAY for LIFE of IMPERIAL BEACH is COMING SOON,  August 1-2, 2015 9am to 9am at Mar Vista High School , on its Football Field!!   WE WELCOME THE PUBLIC to COME OUT and SEE WHAT RELAY IS ALL ABOUT!

Admission is free.   The community is invited  to join us beginning at 9am Sat 8.1 until 10pm then come back again at 7 – 10am Sunday, 8.2.

There will be Live music from Local Bands, Food, Fun, Carnival Games, Kidz Zone and RAFFLE PRIZES  that you will not want to miss!  There is something  for everyone!  Relay For Life  is a 24 hour event that raises funds for The American Cancer Society.  When you see the tents and canopies go up around the Field, you’ll  know it’s time to RELAY!  BRING YOUR FAMILY and YOUR FRIENDS and EXPERIENCE RELAY for LIFE!

It is a special once a year event , one you’ll always remember!  The day begins with Opening Ceremonies then Relay gets off to a spirited  Start while we honor Cancer Survivors as they take the first celebratory lap around the track.  Teams walk to theme laps and we play all day until nighttime approaches and a feeling of reverence comes over Relay as we hold our Luminary Ceremony and remember our lost loved one.  A  bag pipe plays, the track is surrounded by luminary bags decorated in honor of someone we hold dear that now glows with candlelight, the crowd is hushed as we make our way around the track in silence.  You can feel the love and heartache.  You can also feel and see compassion and support for  those that are in the here and now.  It is an amazing hour.  One you’ll never forget.  JOIN US WON’T You?  “We’ve gotta’ DO SOMETHING!”

The night moves on and we get a little crazy and have a whole lotta’ fun.  Our theme laps fill the  night  and go on until 9am Sunday morning.  When the band isn’t playing, music will be.  There is never a dull moment at RELAY.

At 5am the rooster crows, we get coffee and walk in a pajama lap. Prize for the best PJ’s then at 9am Sunday morning Relay winds down.  Tired but with a “feel good” feeling,  we close our Relay with a FIGHT BACK Ceremony.  A commitment to stay the course and fight this disease called CANCER.  OUR MOTTO – CANCER NEVER SLEEPS SO for 24 hours, NEITHER DO WE.

RELAY began in May 1985 by one doctor, a surgeon who wanted  to raise awareness of cancer and boost the income of his local cancer charity. He spent 24 hours walking  a track in Tacoma, Washington, and raised over $27,000.  His goal was to show that one person really can make a difference.

Since then, Relay For Life has become the largest fundraising event for cancer in the world. RELAY is an inspirational overnight event that empowers and unites local communities to fight cancer. Since 2007, Imperial Beach Little league began their fight to win against cancer by forming their own Imperial Beach Relay for Life in 2007.  It began small at Sports Park.  Since then IB Relay has gotten progressively larger and now with a very accommodating Mar Vista High School, the event is held on their  Football Field and its track.   This year so far there are 20 teams.  Their goal is 30 teams and $30,000.00!!  If you have a passion and want to make a difference, it’s NOT too late to form your team today!

A Community that Cares––and Acts. Relay For Life is a life-changing event that brings together more than 3.5 million people––to celebrate the lives of those who have battled  cancer; remember loved ones lost to the disease; and fight back against a disease that takes too much.

Celebrate. Each Relay For Life events opens with a celebration of life. Cancer survivors walk that first lap along with their caregivers. It is a celebration of life and courage, and commitment to reach the finish line––a life free of cancer.

Remember. During the evening luminaria ceremony, we recognize loved ones who are fighting cancer and those we have lost. Sold by volunteers, each luminaria is decorated and placed around the

track, lighting the way for walkers.

Fight Back. Our mission is to eliminate cancer and diminish suffering from cancer. WE ARE WINNING.

•Form your team today!•Proudly walk the Lap of Hope as a cancer survivor. •Volunteer your time. •Be a corporate or individual sponsor. •Dedicate a luminaria.
