Sun & Sea Festival’s Sandcastle Competition Continued Despite Unseasonable Rainfall

The third Sun & Sea Festival, a family-friendly event that features the best sandcastle carving competition in the County took place despite the unseasonable rainfall. The crowds started early with the 9 a.m. parade and visitors kept coming throughout the day only dashing under cover briefly when the hardest rain fell. Entertainment and sandcastle building kept the festival lively Imperial Beach’s largest annual event didn’t disappoint.

According to Leonard Gonzales, sandcastle team chairman, “The rain didn’t affect the quality of the sand carving it was just a different experience. We are used to carving in the sunshine and heat.”

The winning sculptors are:

Masters A - 10 person teams Professional level

First Place -- I B Posse $5,000   Name of sculpture: Myths and Legends

Second Place – Sand Squirrels $2,500   Name of sculpture: Hippy Hippos

Third Place – Arch-I-Sand- $1,000  Name of sculpture: Star Wars Theme

Masters B – 3 person teams professional level

First Place:  Sandcastle Man and Sons: Name of sculpture: Sandcastle theme:  $2,500

Second Place: Team SandStorm: Name of sculpture: Roman Gladiator theme: $1,000
Third Place: The Sand Architects: Name of sculpture: Water Conservation theme:  $500

Open – Amateurs

First Place: Coastal Carvers: Name of sculpture: Minions theme: $500

Second Place: Sculptintures: Name of sculpture: Minions Beach Resort: $250

Third Place: Team Balala: Name of sculpture: Robot Baymax:  $100
