The Imperial Beach Girls Softball All Stars put in Lots of Hard Work to Make it to State Championship Tournament in Lancaster this weekend, July 3rd to 5th.  Both the 14U Team and the 10U Team’s qualified to go to the State Tournament. The 8U Team played very hard as well but came up just short in qualifying for the State Tournament. Imperial Beach is very proud of all these girls and any girl that played softball for Imperial Beach this year.

Thanks to Matt McCoy we have insight into what the 14U (ages 14 and under) girls went through to make their Dreams Come True! Of course all the All Star Teams put up similar hard work as well and we name all the All Stars, Coaches & Team Parents as well!

What it took to get there by Matt McCoy;

14U All Star team formed on May 2nd 2015. First weeks we practiced hard. Girls called it a smaller version of hell week. Something the High School players do before the season starts. This gets them physically and mentally prepared for long days playing two to four games in one day. Other All Star coaches were looking at us like we were crazy. Manager Mike B. had the girls doing P90X workouts as a warm up, and then we would begin our practice.

After our First Tournament practices were lighter and we focused more on our mistakes, we made during the game and tried to correct them. Our First Tournament was Lakeside Cactus Park Showdown We faced good teams that we knew we would see again later down the road. Teams like Clairemont 1 and 2, Lakeside, Ramona Navajo, Alpine and Santee. We ended up taking second place in that Tournament.

From there we were on our way to Ramona Valley of the Sun Tournament Showdown. We played won against Ramona and losing again in the Championship game against Alpine. Then we headed into the Carlsbad Seabreeze Tournament. We did not play up to our level and we went home with a lot of work to do. After a good week of practice the girls came ready to play in the Temecula Old Town Shootout. We came up short against Santee. Sending us back to the drawing board.

Getting ready for the Southern California ASA San Diego Districts  we regrouped had  relaxed practices  incorporated a parent vs player friendly softball game and took the girls to Fun 4 All  to use the batting cages. Our First game at Districts was against Lakeside. We lost and ended up in the loser bracket.  Our first game in loser bracket was against Ramona We won that game moving onto the Semi Finals against Lakeside. They lost against Clairemont 2. We ended up winning against Lakeside it felt good because they beat us the day before.  We entered the Championship game playing back to back games. We fought hard and gave Clairemont 2 all we had. We lost 4 to 2 Our Manager, Coaches and parents were very proud of the girls for digging deep and battling hard all day long.

14U team has earned a spot in the State Championships in Lancaster CA July 3,4 and 5.  We are proud to represent Imperial Beach in Lancaster Look out for Fundraisers throughout the week. Help our girls get to States.

Thank you in advance,

14U Coaching staff and parents.

More about the competition:

There were some much larger leagues the IB Girls had to compete against. Big leagues like Escondido and Clairemont, Carlsbad, Vista. In all there were 17 teams in the District League. These are the team the Imperial Beach Girls 14u All Stars got past to get to the State Championship Tournament in Lancaster. An amazing feat against teams drawing from as much as 3x to 4x times the population!!!:

Carlsbad, Clairemont, Coronado -SSD, Escondido, Fallbrook, La Costa, Lakeside, Ramona, Rancho San Diego, San Diego fast pitch, San Diguito, Scripps Ranch NSD, San Diego UC Del Sol, Valley Mesa  SSD, and Vista.

This story doesn't include all the hard work the girls, the parents and coaches had to do to be able to afford to be able to go to all theses tournaments and of course the community of Imperial Beach who have been great with the support of their hometown teams!

So as the teams depart today, Thursday, we wish them all the success in the world as they leave for their 3 day tournament in Lancaster on July 3rd thru 5th and we are very proud of everyone no matter what the outcome is this weekend.
