County of San Diego Wins Major Awards at Taxpayers Association Gala

SAN DIEGO – County Supervisor Greg Cox’s video skit about the Bayshore Bikeway was the big hit at last night’s San Diego County Taxpayers Association Goldens dinner, where the County was honored with three major awards.

The video featured Cox and former County Chief Administrative Officer Walt Ekard reenacting the famous courtroom scene from the movie “A Few Good Men.” In the skit, Cox plays the role portrayed by Jack Nicholson in the movie and defends the development of the Bayshore Bikeway, a nationally recognized 24-mile bike path that circles San Diego Bay.

The video received a spontaneous standing ovation at last night’s award. It has earned more than 300 views on YouTube since last night and has had dozens of retweets on Twitter.

“I’m glad the crowd enjoyed the skit, and I hope this encourages more people to discover the Bayshore Bikeway,” said Cox.

In April, Cox won a national “Planning Advocate Award” from the American Planning Association for his work on parks and recreation projects, including the Bayshore Bikeway. Cox has championed the Bikeway for two decades.

In addition to Cox’s video, the County of San Diego was recognized last night for programs and projects that wisely spend taxpayer dollars. The County won the Grand Golden Watchdog Award for the Sheriff’s Department “Veterans Moving Forward” program to help incarcerated veterans re-enter society. The County Planning Development Services department won a Golden Watchdog for a “Permit Streamlining” program. And the County won a Visionary Leadership Award for the construction of the downtown County Administration Center Waterfront Park.
