I.B.’s Health Insurance broker explains why the Private exchange is an advantage for small businesses and has options to keep your business out of the penalty box.

Did you know that everyone is impacted by the Affordable Care Act? Whether you call it Obamacare, Health Care Reform, The ACA, or The Affordable Care Act, it’s all the same and it impacts every American.

Deric Fernandez is a local Health Insurance Broker who helps small and mid-sized businesses with their employee benefits needs. Employee Benefits are generally comprised of medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance. Deric started in the health insurance industry in 1989 and has studied the ACA since it was passed into law in 2010. As a subject matter expert he has been a guest speaker on the topic with numerous organizations including the Balboa Park HR Affinity Group, Building Industry Association of San Diego, and the San Diego Chapter of Enrolled Agents.

“For an employer offering a small group health plan, there are a lot of compliance measures they need to be aware of. I help the small to mid-sized employer simplify the complicated and keep them out of the ‘penalty box’.”

Also, the concept of the exchange model such as Covered California is nothing new. Deric has been helping his clients access the Private Health Exchange called Cal Choice for many years. With Cal Choice, small companies can offer multiple plan options and carriers all through a single source. This allows small and mid-sized companies to offer Kaiser, Aetna, Sharp, Anthem, and United HealthCare all at the same time. So, if some employees want a Kaiser plan while others want a Sharp health plan, Cal Choice is the solution.

Deric Fernandez is a dynamic Employee Benefits Advisor with Benefit Pro Insurance Services.

He earned his MBA from National University in 2006 and is actively involved in leadership roles and serves on the Board for several organizations within San Diego County. He currently serves as Chair of the San Diego Employers’ Advisory Council, Past President of Imperial Beach/South Bay Kiwanis Club; Former Vice Chair of Imperial Beach Redevelopment Oversight Board, and Membership Committee for the San Diego Building Industry Association (BIA).

As a life-long resident of Imperial Beach, Deric and his wife Sharon are proud to raise their boys in I.B.
