City of Imperial Beach staff and its consultant team continue to work on the next phase of the Palm Avenue Mixed-Use & Commercial Corridor Master Plan which will build upon the Master Plan Study approved by the City Council in February 2009. On April 29, 2014, a Community Workshop was held at the City Hall Community Room during which the Master Plan concepts were presented and comments, feedback and input was gathered from those in attendance. A public information sheet was distributed as well. Comments were submitted and staff has prepared responses, found here.
Community Members are encouraged to participate in the outreach and engagement effort as Imperial Beach takes another step in the improvement and beautification of Palm Avenue. This Master Plan effort, which will be funded primarily by a SANDAG Smart Growth Incentive Program Grant, is intended to design and implement streetscape and public right-of-way improvements along the City’s primary commercial and transit boulevard to transform the corridor into the City’s “main street” by promoting pedestrian, bicycle, transit and vehicular traffic safety improvements and by encouraging commercial, retail and mixed use development aimed at facilitating environmentally sound smart growth principles.
The Palm Avenue corridor is envisioned as a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly, mixed-use commercial district emblematic of “Classic Southern California.” To that end, the Master Plan is aimed at ensuring that Palm Avenue is a safe, comfortable and attractive district for pedestrians, bicyclists, vehicles, residents and businesses. The proposed streetscape design concepts will also help to revitalize the corridor by attracting potential new development and by bringing new activity and life to the area.
