Imperial Beach Mayor's Race is still too close to call. Mayor increases his lead to 61 votes after the latest vote count!

For the Imperial Beach mayoral race, Mayor Jim Janney increased his lead from 33 votes to 61 votes over Serge Dedina. This number although small in number represents about a doubling of the lead and can be the start of a trend if it continues Friday. The county Registrar of Voters updated its numbers Thursday at 5 p.m. with the next official update foe today at 5 p.m.

The county Registrar of Voters updated its numbers Thursday at 5 p.m. after counting 30,000 more absentee and provisional ballots for the County of San Diego. The number left remaining for votes to be counted for Imperial Beach appears to be substantially less with about 1,000 votes left. From what I have been able to find out 650 are mail in ballots dropped off at the Imperial Beach Library and 350 are “Provisional Ballots”.

Provisional ballots are ballots that have some sort of problem with them according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provisional_ballot . here is how they explain it:

provisional ballot is used to record a vote when there are questions about a given voter's eligibility. A provisional ballot would be cast when:

·        The voter refuses to show a photo ID (in regions that require one)

·        The voter's name does not appear on the electoral roll for the given precinct.

·        The voter's registration contains inaccurate or out-dated information such as the wrong address or a misspelled name.

·        The voter's ballot has already been recorded

Whether a provisional ballot is counted is contingent upon the verification of that voter's eligibility.

A guarantee that a voter could cast a provisional ballot if he or she believes that they are entitled to vote was one of the guarantees of the Help America Vote Act of 2002.

So with not knowing the details on San Diego handles “Provisional Ballots” that is all I can give you on that. Maybe someone with more knowledge of the process can help us with this?
